Can you really use NLP as part of your marketing strategy? The answer would appear to be yes! In recent years, increasing numbers of organizations are using various forms of NLP to improve the way their company ‘thinks’ and establish improved business relationships. After all, NLP is essentially about the study of ‘greatness’, a quality we all strive to achieve in every aspect of our daily lives.

So, what exactly is NLP? The process itself can be separated into 3 main areas:

· Internal state – the domain of the emotions

· Internal process – thought processes, beliefs and strategies.

· External behavior – physical actions, physiology and external communication

Let’s explore these areas. Internal state – this area primarily covers the emotions we ‘feel’. Emotions play a major part in any marketing strategy, in the way that companies don’t necessarily sell the features of a product or service, but rather the benefits to the individual. And, of course, benefits in effect are all about emotions – i.e. how the product/service will enhance a buyers’ life, make certain processes easier for them, and even make them happier!

Forming an understanding of how these emotions can drive behavior is a key part of any NLP training plan. By examining basic values, you could form a marketing plan to appeal to people holding varying levels of values, and in effect, could create a very powerful marketing campaign.

Then we move onto the internal process. This area is about our internal thoughts and personal beliefs. Using the NLP method, there are many ways to create and maintain a positive influence on an internal level. Two such methods are the ‘Meta Model’ – a language model dedicated to the art of being specific with language and the ‘Milton Model’ teaching hypnotic language patterns which are perhaps viewed as a little more vague and ambiguous.

The Milton model however has amazingly powerful linguistic patterns that can be implemented into a marketing plan. To see examples of the Milton Model – you need only look at the majority of advertising campaigns created by major organizations, and see how they use these kinds of language patterns for maximum effect. A great example is the Nike advertisements, using the phrase ‘Nike, just do it!’ This statement will mean different things to different people, and clearly has worked very well for the company.

The power of language cannot be understated. Used correctly, it can also influence people at their basic level of beliefs. NLP is certainly a very exciting area to explore, and has many applications in the world of marketing.
